As perceived by the population… beyond the senses

Silvia Fernández Cacho
Head of the Landscape Laboratory of the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage

After the publication of the Council of Europe Convention on Landscape in 2000 and the importance it gives to perceptual aspects, landscape programmes, projects and actions began to incorporate them in varying degrees of detail to guide their formulation, implementation and/or evaluation.

In most cases, the analysis of perceptions has focused on factors that can be captured through the senses, and especially via sight, such as colours, volumes, composition, textures, the visual field and others. [+]

The international seminar ‘Communities and Peripheries' is ready to start
The international seminar ‘Communities and Peripheries’, which will be held in A Fonsagrada in Galicia, Spain from 19 to 22 September 2023, emerges as a new space to continue developing some of the ideas raised at the seminar ‘Ruinas y Descampados’ (‘Ruins and Waste Grounds’), which took place in Morille in September 2022. While this first seminar focused on landscapes forgotten and ruined by progress, here the same problem will be addressed from a social point of view: namely, how human communities inhabit and transform these landscapes. Round table discussions will be held throughout the seminar in which experts in art, culture, philosophy and geography will think about these issues. The seminar will also include complementary activities, such as a workshop on hospitality and guided tours of the area.

The Giulio Andreolli Fare Paesaggio Award gives an honourable mention to a project that links landscape and energy
Promoted by the Landscape Observatory of the Province of Trent, which evaluates projects and initiatives in the Alpine territory, the award has given an honourable mention to a hydroelectric energy project in the Swiss canton of Grisons. The project consists of increasing the efficiency of the hydroelectric energy production of two lakes with a pumped storage system that will allow production to be regulated based on energy demand. The jury has valued the previous participatory process in which the local population, the public administration, environmental organisations and the company took part, which has made it possible to reach agreements to reduce and offset the project’s impact on the landscape and the environment.

Paesaggio e società. Una prospettiva geografica
Castiglioni, Benedetta. Roma: Carocci editore, 2022. ISBN: 978-88-290-1672-3.

This book starts from the idea that it is not possible to deal with landscapes without considering the people and social groups that inhabit them, observe them and modify them directly or indirectly. Moreover, interaction with the landscape is part of everyone’s experience and a component of the dynamics of each social group. Considering the landscape as a tool for geographical interpretation and planning conscious actions towards sustainability, the text provides an overview to understand the plurality characterising each discourse on the landscape and to grasp its complexity.
