| A new book from the Observatory, Paisatge i Imatge. La fotografia |
|
The new publication, entitled Paisatge i Imatge. La fotografia (Landscape and Image. Photography), is a selection of what happened at the seminar held in 2017 in Girona and organised jointly by the Landscape Observatory and Girona City Council's Image Research and Dissemination Centre. The two-volume book analyses the role of photography as a tool for landscape interpretation and management and for exploring the new landscape photography, applying a cross-cutting approach that takes in multiple perspectives: art, aesthetics, documentation, territory, urbanism, heritage and publishing, among others. | Interest from the Netherlands in the Observatory's landscape awareness strategies |
|
The Observatory had the honour of attending, as guest institution, the Symposium 'The future of the European Landscape', organised by the Society of Landscape Research (WLO) on 17 September in the Dutch town of Culemborg. The symposium is part of a series of conferences organised in recent months by the European network UNISCAPE. Held in a hybrid format (face-to-face and online), it was supported by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and the University of Wageningen (WUR). During the Symposium, recommendations were proposed for actions and measures to provide the necessary political and institutional support for landscape over the next 20 years.

| The CADS presents the report 'Un litoral al límit' (Coastline on the brink) with recommendations for integrated management of the Catalan coast |
|
The result of one and half year's work by the CADS, the report provides a brief diagnosis of the main challenges currently facing Catalonia's coast and proposes 10 strategic recommendations for addressing them, from the viewpoint of the Integrated Management of Coastal Areas. It gathers different proposals that make up a framework of integrated policies for moving forward in the transformation toward sustainability, while also presenting several blue economy activities. The Landscape Observatory was consulted by the CADS regarding the report, and it gave its opinion from a landscape viewpoint. You can read it here.

| Workshop O caracter da paisaxe: O Camiño Inglés, a vila e o viño das Mariñas Betanzos de Galícia |

The Juana de Vega Foundation's Landscape School in Galicia organised an international landscape workshop from 1 to 4 September in Betanzos in which theoretical aspects and technical reflections were combined with proactive projects and field visits. The workshop's title was “O carácter da paisaxe: o camiño inglés, a vila e o viñedo das Mariñas de Betanzos” (The character of the landscape: the English Way, the village and the vineyard of As Mariñas de Betanzos) and the Observatory brought to it the vision of fifteen years of landscape work methodology in Catalonia, particularly in the characterisation of landscape values and units.

| 15th Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism at the CCCB, dedicated to territorial balance |
|
The 15th Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism and the CCCB organised three days of debate and workshops to reflect on the future of the territory and its resources, community life and the current challenges of urban thought. The 'Balancing the territory' workshop, attended by the Landscape Observatory's director, Pere Sala, was part of the cycle "Living together. Territory, community, resources". It was a space for reflection where architecture and urbanism professionals could engage with experts, researchers and activists in different fields to share experiences and chat with the audience.

| The Lligallos project, the historic landscapes of the livestock paths in the Terres de l'Ebre |
|
The goal of the Lligallos project is to give visibility to the close relationship between humans and cattle, horses and sheep in the historical construction of the landscape of the Ebro Delta, and to recover and give visibility to the transhumance movement. The Terres de l'Ebre region has an extensive network of livestock paths (or 'lligallos' in the local dialect) used for transhumance. The project draws on gastronomic initiatives, organisation of conferences and other dissemination activities, exhibitions, and traditional music and stories, among other activities, to promote these paths so that they can link new cultural and tourism products in the territory.

| The Xunta (Galician Regional Government) presents a guide for the landscape integration of viewpoints |
|
The primary goal of the 'Good practice guide for identifying and conditioning viewpoints', drafted in partnership with the Juana de Vega Foundation's Landscape School of Galicia, is to establish a series of guidelines for identifying and designing viewpoints and specifies a number of good practices for integrating them in the landscape. The guide analyses and classifies viewpoints in Galicia based on the observed landscape and the type of the observation site. Each type is accompanied by a descriptive summary along with criteria and recommendations. You can download the guide here.

| Landscape policies highlighted at the Council of Europe's workshop |
|
Organised by the Council of Europe in partnership with the Council of Majorca (Consell de Mallorca) and the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport, the 25th Congress for Implementing the European Landscape Convention was held in Majorca from 6 to 8 October. Representatives from the Landscape Observatory attended the congress, whose goal was to present public policy experiences with respect to landscape strategies, action plans and documents for landscape quality and the integration of landscape in territorial, urban, environmental, cultural, economic, agricultural and social planning policies, among others.

| Dry stone landscapes featured in November |
|
Two major events have been organised this November that highlight dry stone heritage and the landscapes it shapes. First, the Ramon Muntaner Institute will host the 11th Meeting of Dry Stone and Traditional Architecture of Catalan-speaking territories at its headquarters in Móra la Nova from 5 to 7 November. This event has become a basic tool for dissemination, study, knowledge and the exchange of ideas, fostering physical and cultural contacts between people and organisations interested in this subject. Second, we will be celebrating Dry Stone Week for the second year running, through the COL·LABORAxPAISATGE project. Anyone wishing to take part should organise a dry stone-related activity between 19 and 28 November 2021 and fill in the form to register it. The proposed activities can be found in an online programme and on a locations map, and also on social media.
